Twit Awards for the Week 2/13/23
As we noted in the news, Kim Petras and Sam Smith won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group for their song Unholy. They performed the song in red outfits at the show. This has caused much backlash in the far-right community. Ted Cruz called it “Evil,” and many others also hastened to call the performance “Satanic.” For rushing to label others as “demonic” or “Satanic” or “evil” for disagreeing with you, when you have warped the teachings of Jesus in order to fit your political views, the people making these comments get a Twit Award. Michael Knowles of The Daily Wire wrote a piece chastising the Grammy awards voters for the win by Kim Petras and Sam Smith. He asked, “Isn’t it odd how depictions of demons, how depictions of weird ghoulish devilish demonic figures are always androgynous?. . .They’re never super duper hyper-masculine chads. They’re never beautiful, truly gorgeous women with classical proportions and representations of beauty. They’re always androgynous. They’re always trans.” First off, the Biblical depictions of demons are masculine, if they have any visible gender. Even limiting ourselves to art history, he is not correct, and the classical depiction of Satan includes facial hair. Indeed, the demon Michael Knowles describes would fail in his mission, as people would be suspicious of such a being. For making up stuff in order to literally demonize the people he dislikes, Michael Knowles gets a Twit Award. LGBTQ Nation has this story.
Kim Petras and Sam Smith are not the only evil transgender thing. The Advocate reports that the American Family Association is making a big fuss about The Sims introducing additional transgender and non-binary elements. The group writes, “The game promotes an anti-biblical worldview of creation and reality, asserting the falsehood that humans can be ‘non-binary.'” First, intersex individuals do exist. Secondly, the binary is a social concept, imposing ideals of behavior onto people based on what is inaccurately referred to as their “biological sex.” For reading into the Bible what they want and denying the very inclusive and understanding nature of the message of Jesus, and for threatening families that are intelligent enough to see how wrong the argument of the American Family Association is, the American Family Association gets a Twit Award. Earl Paules is vice president of the school board for the Palmerton Area School District in Pennsylvania. He recently had a sign made which says, “No unisex bathrooms, no litter boxes in our schools here in Pamerton. Taxpayers have rights!” Of course, the litter boxes are a fake issue; no school has installed litter boxes in restrooms. The unisex restrooms are real, though. Social conservatives on school boards, such as Earl Paules, insist that transgender students would have to use either a unisex restroom or the restroom of the restroom of the sex that they were assigned at birth. Single-occupancy restrooms are a common form of unisex restrooms, so the “no unisex restrooms” decree would mean no single-occupancy restrooms. The fact that transgender students could use them was something he mentioned in explaining his opposition. The fact that cisgender students could use them–and are more likely to use them than are transgender students–does not even merit a mention by him. That amounts to prejudice against transgender people. For opposing a solution to the treatment of transgender students, and for recommending that the school district violate the state’s building code, Earl Paules gets a Twit Award. Baroness Nicholson, a member of the House of Lords who is well known for her opposition to LGBTQ issues and especially transgender issues, expressed her opposition to crosswalks with the colors of the rainbow LGBTQ Pride flag. Her reasoning is that the pattern could “trigger epilepsy.” This has never been a problem before, and has not been mentioned as a problem. For making up a medical excuse which no doctors have worried about and citing it as a reason to ban an expression of support for a group, Baroness Nicholson gets a Twit Award. Arkansas state Senator Jason Rapert recently urged Christians to “take authority” over the U.S. government, warning about drag queens “running this place.” The one drag queen known to be a part of the U.S. government is Representative George Santos, who most certainly is not running the government by himself. For describing something which is literally not happening, and for insisting that the will of the voters be overturned, Arkansas state Senator Jason Rapert gets a Twit Award.
