Lynn Conway

Lynn Conway has passed away at age 86. She was fired for transitioning in 1968, an act for which IBM apologized over half a century later. She was a leading light in computer design, and literally wrote the book on the design of computer chips. The Advocate has this story.

Federal judge Robert Hinkle has issued an injunction against Florida enforcing its ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors. In his decision he writes, “Gender identity is real.” He declared the law unconstitutional. The state of Florida is likely to appeal the decision. CNN has this story.

While the decision by Judge Hinkle in Florida seems out of step with the decision of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld Alabama’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors, the Alabama Political Reporter notes that Judge Hinkle was upset by the animosity towards transgender individuals which was shown in the discussions leading up to the law being passed.

San Francisco has declared itself a safe haven for transgender and nonbinary individuals. KQED has this story.

In the same week in which Judge Robert Hinkle issued an injunction against Florida’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors, Judge Reed O’Connor in Texas issued a temporary injunction against the Biden administration’s interpretation that Title IX protects transgender students from discrimination based on their “biological sex.” Later in the week, Judge Terry Doughty issued a concurring decision, in a case that blocks enforcement of the guidance in four states. More that two dozen U.S. Senators, all Republicans, have endorsed a legislative effort to oppose the guidance from the Biden administration. The Hill has this story.

Lia Thomas

Lia Thomas has lost her challenge to the policy of World Aquatics which prevents transgender females from competing as women in swimming. CBS News has this story.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a defense appropriation bill, but added several culture war provisos, including a ban on gender-affirming care being paid by the Pentagon. This story comes from Reuters.

The bill which funds the military also has a provision which prevents the military from hosting drag shows. Representative Robert Garcia (D-California) points out that there were drag queens among the army which defeated Hitler. The Advocate has this story.

Two members of the U.S. House of Representatives have introduced a bill which would prevent discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in the selection of a jury. This story comes from LGBTQ Nation.

The International Olympic Committee has released its guidelines prior to the 2024 Paris Olympics. The guidelines warn against using the term “biological” or “genetic” in reference to sex or gender. This story comes from PinkNews.

An appeals court has ruled that a school district in Massachusetts may ban a t-shirt with the phrase, “There are only two genders.” The Advocate has this story.

Sarah McBride

Sarah McBride is now running unopposed for the U.S. Congress, after her primary opponent dropped out. Given voting patterns in Delaware, she is nearly assured of winning the seat, according to The Advocate.
