Last Friday was Transgender Day of Visibility. In advance of that, Democrats in Congress reintroduced the Transgender Bill of Rights, which would outline the sorts of acts that the congress should take to protect transgender people. The Hill has this story.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden signed a presidential proclamation acknowledging Transgender Day of Visibility. On Friday, President Biden made a statement of his support for transgender people, and especially transgender youth. This story comes from CNN.

The U.S. Department of State also issued a statement recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility. The State Department says that transgender rights are human rights, that the Department is committed to transgender rights, and that more work needs to be done to protect transgender people.

Rallies were held for Transgender Day of Visibility, often in places where transgender rights are under attack. The Associated Press has this story.

Pete MacHale

Pete MacHale, a transgender actor, has reportedly been hired for a part in the upcoming season of Doctor Who. MacHale is the first out trans man to appear in Doctor Who. PinkNews has this story.

Transgender people are too often being attacked personally. Tasiyah “Siyah” Woodland, a Black transgender teen, was found shot to death in Maryland last week. This story comes from Them.

In Nebraska, the transgender teen son of State Senator Megan Hunt testified against a bill that would forbid gender-affirming care to those under the age of 19. The New York Times notes that the testimony seems to have swayed very few lawmakers who supported the measure.

In Kentucky, the legislature overrode the governor’s veto of a comprehensive anti-transgender bill. The bill covers athletics, gender-affirming care for minors, and more. This story comes from Them.

West Virginia also passed a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors. Axios has this story.

Many of the laws banning gender-affirming care for minors have an exception to allow those already receiving care to continue to receive treatment. An article in Them points out that this creates a rush to get transgender children started on medical treatment, even though a rush to start treatment is one of the complaints against doctors prescribing puberty blockers and HRT.

Idaho Governor Brad Little signed a bill regulating transgender students’ use of restrooms and changing rooms at school. This particular version of a “bathroom bill” allows students to sue for “emotional harm” caused by seeing a transgender person in their restroom. LGBTQ Nation reminds us that Idaho is already being sued for its aggressive anti-transgender legislation.

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Sasha Velour has a new book titled The Big Reveal: An Illustrated Manifesto of Drag. She was interviewed about the book on Good Morning America. Watch the video on the ABC website.

Not to be outdone in anti-transgender legislation, Florida has introduced a bill to regulate the use of restrooms by transgender students. Florida already has such a law, which Drew Adams challenged in federal court. Politico has this story.

Some transgender students and former students talked to Them about how to fight transgender restroom laws.

Teen Vogue has some tips on how transgender students can stay safe in school.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey recently began a large-scale investigation into gender-affirming care for minors, following a complaint from an employee at the Children’s Hospital of St. Louis. However, the investigation was not limited to that hospital, but included other prescribers. One of those prescribers, Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri, has filed a suit against the Attorney General. The AP has this story.

Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old whose family said he “relatively recently announced” he was transgender, was identified as the gunman who killed six people at a school in Nashville. LGBTQ Nation has this story.

Some right-wing types, including Donald Trump Jr., tried to make the claim that there has been a tremendous increase in the number of shootings by transgender males. A fact check by the AP shows that the vast majority of mass shooters are cisgender males.

NBC News reports that transgender people in Tennessee are very much afraid of backlash in the wake of the identification of the shooter at a Nashville school as a transgender male.

While anti-trans and anti-drag legislation blossoms around the country we learn that the Build-A-Bear store has introduced a RuPaul bear. The bear comes pre-stuffed and is only available online. Learn more from The New York Post.

Right-wing social media suggested that a protest at Tennessee’s state capitol was an “insurrection,” and that it was led by transgender people. A fact check by Newsweek showed the protest to be very unlike January 6, 2021, and no evidence that transgender people led the protest.

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum vetoed a bill which would have forbidden public school teachers from using a pronoun which does not agree with the sex listed on a student’s birth certificate. This story comes from The Hill.

U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene had her Twitter account restricted after she announced a rally on March 31 to protest what she called “Trans Day of Vengeance.” The restrictions were lifted later in the day, according to LGBTQ Nation.

Four families from Florida have filed suit, challenging the constitutionality of the ban on gender-affirming care for those under age 18. The Advocate has this story.

A report from the Trevor Project suggests that there may be increased risks for those who transition genders at a young age. However, those risks are lower when parents support their transgender children. This story comes from The Advocate.

Laura Jane Grace

Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! is touring in April and May, according to The Advocate.

Daniel Radcliffe talked with some transgender and non-binary young people as part of a Transgender Day of Visibility event from The Trevor Project. The Advocate has this story.

In the latest episode of her podcast, J.K. Rowling said that she gets support in her anti-transgender views from a doctor who, it turns out, also opposed lockdown and masks as a way of fighting COVID. People who followed this doctor’s advice were more likely to get COVID. This story comes from PinkNews.

Reba McEntire is not known as a particularly political celebrity, although she is not always quiet about such things. She announced this week how she disagreed with the new legal restrictions on drag, and proclaimed, “God bless ’em to wear high heels–I feel for ’em.” She feels that drag isn’t an important issue.

UK Athletics has followed the lead of World Athletics, placing a near-total ban on any athlete who had a male puberty competing in women’s athletics. This story comes from The Guardian.

Dr. Helen Webberley has been won an appeal of the suspension of her license to practice medicine. She treated transgender patients, including children. The BBC has this story.

After her protest in Australia was poorly received and New Zealand would not let her in, TERF activist Posie Parker said she wanted to hold a protest in Ireland. She had to quickly announce a change of plans, due to an upcoming visit from President Biden. This story comes from PinkNews.
