Utah has become the first state to pass and sign into law a ban on gender-affirming care for minors this year. The bill flew through the state legislature with relative ease, and was signed into law by Governor Spencer Cox. Utah is the fifth state to ban the medical or surgical treatment of gender dysphoria in minors, according to Healthline.

The West Virginia House of Delegates passed a bill to ban gender-affirming medical or surgical care for minors. That bill moves on to the state Senate next. The Human Rights Campaign announced their disagreement with the bill.

The South Dakota House of Representatives also passed a bill to ban transgender medical or surgical care for minors. The only out LGBTQ member of the state House spoke against the bill, but it passed anyway, according to The Advocate.

KELO has the story of a doctor who is quitting his practice in South Dakota because of the ban on gender-affirming care to minors.

In Mississippi, a bill banning gender-affirming care for minors passed the state House two weeks ago. This week, that bill passed a Senate committee, which means that it can go to the full Senate for a vote. The Human Rights Campaign expressed the reasons why they disagree with this bill.

The attempt to ban transgender health care, especially for minors, is going on in 21 states. The Advocate has a run-down of all these bills, from the one which already passed in Utah to some that have no chance of passing.

Former President Donald Trump posted a video in which he said he would pass a national law banning gender-affirming care for minors, and punishing doctors who provide such care. He also said he would pass a law which recognized only two genders. This story can be found in Rolling Stone.

In Michigan, new districts allowed the Democrats to take over both houses of the state legislature, as well as reelect the governor. Michigan does not have a “Don’t Say Gay” bill in its legislature, but a group called the Great Schools Initiative is passing around a form which parents can sign that allegedly would allow the parents to “opt out” of their children hearing any discussion of gender identity or sexual orientation. Mother Jones has a story about the fight to protect health care rights for transgender people.

In Missouri, several Jewish and some Christian leaders testified against the state’s anti-transgender legislation, Religion News Service reports.

Last week, we reported that the Virginia state Senate had rejected three anti-transgender bills. It is now up to six anti-transgender bills that have died in committee in the state Senate, according to Them.

While there have been quite a number of bills proposed to limit the rights of transgender people, 91% of them failed last year. That number is high, but it really should be higher. The Advocate has this story.

World Athletics is talking about lowering testosterone levels for women’s athletics, in an attempt to make it harder for transgender women to win. The current standards already exclude some cisgender women, who are good athletes but who have higher-than-typical levels of testosterone. The Advocate has this story.

UK Athletics wants to make it harder, if not impossible, for transgender women to compete in female sports. They want to create an “open” category, in which transgender athletes can compete. However, they say that the government needs to change the law in order for them to pull this off. ESPN has the story from Reuters.

The Sims introduced some new updates. Sims can now have binders and top surgery scars. They can also wear shape wear. PinkNews reports that the new additions were criticized by the expected sources, but also got some love.

Following a heated debate about housing a transgender female prisoner who is accused of rape, Scotland’s Justice Secretary Keith Brown announced an “urgent review” of the case, as well as others involving transgender women. He said that transgender female prisoners with a history of violence would be kept in male prisons. This story comes from PinkNews.

There will be an inquest into the death of Alice Litman, a trans woman who spent three years waiting for an appointment with a gender clinic before committing suicide. The BBC has this story.

Finland has announced that transgender people will soon be able to get a legal change of gender without having to prove that they have been sterilized. ABC News has the AP’s story.
