Daniela Arroyo Gonzalez will compete in the Miss Universe preliminary contest for the title of Miss Puerto Rico. She is the first transgender woman to compete for the Miss Puerto Rico title, according to Them.

Shinta Ratri, the leader of an Islamic boarding school that offers a haven for transgender women in Indonesia, died on Feb. 1. She was 60. She was a transgender activist since coming out as trans as a teenager. The New York Times has her story.

West Virginia’s ban on transgender athletes was blocked by a three-judge panel of the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. A district court judge lifted his initial ban, saying that the law was constitutional after all. The Hill has this story.

The number of Americans who identify as LGBTQ+ has doubled in the last decade, according to polling by the Gallup organization. 7.2% of those surveyed now identify as LGBTQ+, with 9% of those identifying as transgender. That comes to 0.65% of the population identifying as transgender. This story comes from The Advocate.

Maria Jose Rivera, a 22-year–old transgender woman born in El Salvador, was found dead in Houston last month. She is just now being confirmed as transgender, according to Them.

A new bill in Kentucky would ban anything that would help with the gender transition of a minor. This would include not only HRT and puberty blockers, but also the use of the student’s name and pronouns in school. The Louisville Courier-Journal reports that the bill has 20 co-sponsors so far.

Tennessee’s legislature has passed a bill to ban gender-affirming medical and surgical care for minors. The bill now is in the hands of Governor Bill Lee. This is the third such bill in Tennessee attempting to keep minors from receiving gender-affirming medicine or surgery. The law would give transgender minors one year to detransition, according to LGBTQ Nation.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has promised to sign a bill to ban gender-affirming medical or surgical care for minors. Both houses of the state legislature have passed bills on the matter. The Advocate has this story.

A Catholic bookstore in Jacksonville, Florida, is suing over the city’s non-discrimination ordinance, specifically the part which forces the store’s employees to use the pronouns a customer requests. This story comes from the Florida Times Union.

One month into its legislative session, Texas legislators have filed 37 anti-transgender bills, which is more than any other state. Some of the bills deal with transgender medicine and surgery, some deal with transgender athletes, some deal with what restroom a transgender person may use, and some deal with teaching about the existence of transgender people. The San Antonio Current reports that all of the listed authors of these bills are Republicans.

One of those bills would target public funding for “gender-modification procedure or treatment,” This is intended to stop payment for gender confirmation surgery, with an exception for intersex children. This bill could also affect some cancer treatments. PinkNews has this story.

In an interview with The Texas Tribune, Governor Greg Abbott said that he was willing to sign bills that would limit transgender minors from getting gender-affirming medical or surgical care, and some other anti-transgender legislation.

The ACLU looks back on an attempt last year to use the Department of Child and Protective Services to investigate families with transgender children, on the grounds of “child abuse.”

The Indiana state legislature is not a fan of transgender children, but the state House of Representatives has passed a bill to protect families with transgender children from an investigation by the Department of Child Services. It is part of a Parents’ Bill of Rights,” which would allow parents the right to choose care for their child. The Indiana Capital Chronicle has this story.

In addition to its bill to ban gender-affirming medical and surgical care for minors, Tennessee is also trying to ban any minors from attending a drag show. This story comes from NBC News.

LGBTQ Nation thinks that bans on drag could lead to arrests of transgender people at pride parades, if the trans people do not pass well enough.

A drag brunch in West Virginia was canceled after the local right wing found out about it and began making death threats against the venue, the patrons, and the queens. Mixed Martial Arts instructor Jonathan Haught to the rescue. Haught volunteered himself and his trainees to act as guards. Haught says he will be there to provide security when the show is  rescheduled. He said, “I’m not afraid to stand up to people, and I train to fight people all day, every day, so if somebody really wants to attack somebody, let them attack me instead” Thanks to Ms. Bob Davis for the story. Several states have also introduced anti-LGBTQ bills on pronouns. For the most part, these bills would allow teachers and school staff to ignore a student’s, or even a parent’s, request to use a certain pronoun as a reference. The Advocate has this story.

Washington University at St. Louis denied state Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s request that they halt gender-affirming care at their clinic at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Moreover, they say that they identified the patient who is the subject of the whistleblower complaint, and the patient denies that there was any malpractice. Aisha Sultan, a contributor to The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, is quite disappointed by the dehumanizing of transgender patients and their parents which seems to be an activity practiced by too many politicians.

While providing testimony to the Florida Board of Medicine hearing on gender-affirming care for minors, Lindsey Spero demonstrated how he takes his testosterone, injecting himself in front of the doctors. LGBTQ Nation has this story.

The state of Vermont will now allow parents to choose to register their child as non-binary on their birth certificate. The state already allowed people to choose to list themselves as non-binary on their own birth certificates, according to LGBTQ Nation.

A24 is auctioning off various props from the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once. Profits are going to three charities, one of which is the Transgender Law Center. The charity which will benefit from the auction is listed on each item, according to them.

Shania Twain said in an interview that she is inspired by drag queens, and added, “I want to say that I love you, LGBTQ community.” The Advocate has a link to the interview.

Natalie Wynn, a transgender woman who got hooked into participating in J.K. Rowling’s podcast, says that she feels as though she was used by the author and her co-host, Megan Phelps-Roper. This story comes from PinkNews.

An episode of the Fox series Accused features a storyline about a drag queen who suspects her boyfriend of a crime. The episode marks the television directorial debut of Billy Porter. Out.com has this story.

A Drag Queen Story Hour event at a bookstore in Silver Spring, Maryland, turned violent when the Proud Boys showed up. Police had to intervene, according to The Advocate.

Three candidates have announced for the position of First Minister of Scotland. PinkNews believes that Secretary of Health Humza Yousaf is the candidate most likely to fight for Scotland’s reform of the Gender Recognition Act.

A new report by ILGA-Europe says that LGBTQ rights in Britain took a hit under Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak. This story comes from PinkNews.

A new report by Hospice UK says that trans and non-binary people need more dignity at the end of their lives. So many people signed a petition so quickly that the government will have to look into the matter, according to PinkNews.

There will be an appeal of the ruling last year that the long waits by transgender people to be seen for gender-affirming medical care are lawful. PinkNews has this story.

Many Canadian citizens are asking their country to be a sanctuary for transgender people and their families who are fleeing from places that are oppressing them. That sounds like a lovely and noble idea, except many of those oppressive places are actually parts of the United States. The Onion did a satirical piece about last week’s calls for The New York Times to do better in its coverage of transgender issues, and the paper’s response. According to Them, the article, with its obvious exaggeration, is especially startling in a world where too many other outlets have failed to stand up for transgender people.
