This week, Delaware became the seventeenth state to outlaw the “gay and trans panic” defense. State Senator Sarah McBride was a co-sponsor of the bill, but it took a collective effort to pass it. Governor John Carney signed the bill into law. The Advocate has this story.
Florida’s bathroom ban is being challenged in court. Plaintiffs have asked for a temporary injunction against enforcement of the law while the case is being heard. This story comes from The Advocate.
A motion in a case in the Northern District of Florida says that the state is in “complete defiance” of a court order against the state’s categorical denial of Medicaid payments for the treatment of gender dysphoria. The Miami Herald has this story.
State legislators in Wisconsin have introduced a bill which would ban transgender females from competing in female’s athletics. Governor Tony Evers went to the Capitol to tell the legislature that he will veto any anti-transgender legislation. LGBTQ Nation has this story.
Lawmakers in Ohio have proposed a school restroom bill which would affect transgender students. This story comes from WLWT-TV.
A new law in Nebraska requires a seven-day waiting period between the diagnosis of gender dysphoria and the start of medical treatment for it. The law also requires 40 hours of “gender-identity-focused” therapy before medical treatment can begin, and no gender-confirmation surgery on any patient under the age of 19. The state’s top medical officer calls these “emergency” measures, but does not define what the emergency is. The Associated Press has this story.
Olivia Hill
Olivia Hill was sworn in as a member of the Nashville Metro Council, the first transgender person elected to public office in Tennessee. CNN reports that while transgender people are being elected, they face challenges while in office.
Police in San Juan, Puerto Rico, discovered the remains of a transgender man decomposing in the apartment of his former boyfriend. The deceased was known as Luis Angel Diaz Castro, according to LGBTQ Nation.
Also in Puerto Rico, two men have pleaded guilty to assaulting Alexa Negron Luciano, a transgender woman, hours before she was murdered. LGBTQ Nation has this story.
A study of transgender women who are veterans found that in transgender women, thyroid cancer rates are similar to those for cisgender females, rather than those for cisgender males. Medscape has this story.
The CDC is proposing the use of a “morning-after” medication for sexually-active transgender women and gay men, to prevent the spread of a sexually-transmitted infection. This story comes from The Advocate.
The Swimming World Cup cancelled its plan for an “open category,” in which transgender and non-binary athletes could compete, when no one signed up for it. Newsweek has this story.
In the Asian Games, a sore loser accused the athlete who beat her in the heptathlon of being a transgender woman. The tweet which contained the accusation was later deleted, and the athlete who made the accusation later apologized, according to a report in Outsports.

In Britain, Health Secretary Steve Barclay announced that transgender patients will not be placed in either the male or the female wards of hospitals. PinkNews reports that the previous policy had received no complaints.
Mermaids has quit X (formerly known as Twitter). The British charity for transgender children will do its social media outreach via TikTok. They say that X does not provide safe space for transgender people or transgender organizations. This story comes from PinkNews.
PinkNews also reports that X has removed the option to report content as anti-transgender harassment. Such content would now have to be objected to for “other reasons.” Also removed is the context section, which allows the person making an objection to specify why it is objectionable.
Petra De Sutter, a transgender woman and one of the Deputy Prime Ministers of Belgium, advised British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak not to join “the real bullies,” after Mr. Sunak made some pointedly anti-transgender remarks. Details of the remarks are in this week’s TWITs. He told the Conservative party conference, “We shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be. They can’t. A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That’s just common sense.” The Guardian has this story.

Amy Schneider, the Jeopardy! champion, has released a new memoir, which includes some stories about her transition. She gave Them an interview as part of her publicity tour.
