The big story this week was that the Supreme Court heard arguments on United States v. Skrmentti, the case involving the constitutionality of Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors. In fact, the case is specifically about whether the ban violates the Equal Protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. (The court has received a petition to hear arguments on whether the ban violates parent’s right to direct their child’s medical care, but they have not announced if they will hear arguments on that.) From the comments of the justices, it seems that the state of Tennessee may be allowed to enforce its ban, according to CNN. Sometimes, justices do surprise with their votes.
In the questioning, Justice Amy Coney Barrett pointed out that she was unaware of laws discriminating against transgender people prior to about three years ago. She was told of a history of laws forbidding crossdressing, of which she had been unaware. This story comes from Erin Reed.
Some members of the Montana state legislature tried to pass a rule change, similar to the bathroom law on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Their attempt was fairly obviously aimed at Zooey Zephyr, the only transgender member of the Montana state legislature. The Joint Rules Committee rejected the proposed rule. A day after the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of United States v. Shrmetti, fifteen people were arrested as transgender people and allies held a protest of the bathroom law on Capitol Hill. Among those arrested were Chelssea Manning and Raquel Willis. This story comes from NBC News.

San Jose State University lost in the Mountain West Conference women’s volleyball tournament. The San Jose State University team had been the subject of much controversy and some teams had refused to play against them, because of an allegation that they have a transgender woman as a player. While the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether states have the right to ban gender-affirming medical care for children, France has announced new guidelines which do away with the “wait and see” attitude. This goes against the trend which states like Tennessee have used to defend their bans on gender-affirming medical care.
