The World’s Fastest Friend of TG’s
We rented The World’s Fastest Indian over the weekend. The movie, that is. The original is either in a museum or a scrap heap by now, I’m sure. Anyhoo…
T-girls are popping up everywhere it seems. When you least expect it, there will be an actor in drag. And this movie is no exception.
To sum up, Anthony Hopkins plays New Zealand motorcycle enthusiast Burt Munro. He comes to America to ride on the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speed Week, to break a land speed record.
Along the way, Burt meets a menagerie of characters, including Tina. She’s a transgender motel clerk, played by Chris Williams. (Brother of Vanessa!)
Burt treats her as a lady, even after learning the truth, and they become friends.
What’s really important about this movie and the characters is Burt. He’s the kind of guy everyone likes. Even the motorcycle gang at the beginning of the film come around and respect him. Burt’s just an extremely, incredibly likeable guy.
I found myself thinking, “that’s the kind of person I want to be.”
And I can’t be alone in that, can I? Other people must think that too, right? And whether they do or don’t want to be like Burt, viewers see how he treats Tina. And that’s gotta rub off, doesn’t it? The message seems to be, if you like Burt, or if you want to be like Burt, you’ve got to be nice to everyone, including t-girls.
And that’s a message that needs to be reinforced for the rest of the world.
