The Two Spirit Concept

Wonder why some are tomboys  who would rather play the sport and some are cheerleaders for the team? Wonder why some are strong competitors while others are cooperators? It’s in the genes, not just the jeans.

The recent article in Nature highlighted in the 2 March 2015 issue TWIT column, gives scientific support to the ancient Two Spirit concept of a continuum of sex and gender between the bookends of the male-female binary. When the new doesn’t stand up to science, it’s time to start over and go back to the original idea. Don’t discard the bookends, because those are necessary, but don’t discard the many volumes between them either.

It’s a time of rejoicing for those of us who are in the middle. Were you born with male parts and raised as one? Or were you born and raised as a woman? Are you outspoken, love the blood sports because they give you a reason to be outdoors alone and surrender to the primitive urge to gather food? Are you more comfortable in the action rather than sitting in the bleachers watching?

Do you say to yourself, “I’ll never be a frilly girly girl under the binary, but I do make a damn fine Agent Carter, Jayne Rizzoli, or a frontierswoman at home with hunting and fishing as well as gardening, sewing, and cooking.”  Or maybe you say, “I’ll never be a ‘manly muscle man’ under the binary, but I’m a man even though I’m in a woman’s body.” Perhaps you wear both jeans and skirts depending on the circumstances.

Welcome to the Two Spirit world. The science now proves, at least shows, there is NO need to force yourself into the role of either bookend when you are a book on the shelf except when society stays with the binary. That’s just the most primal of all instincts, to survive, in the fore.

It’s just like the case when Science and the Church knew the sun was the center of our planetary system, but the Church wanted time to introduce the new concept to the masses. Copernicus wasn’t excommunicated because he believed in the helio-centric system, contrary to what you may believe. It was because he pridefully defied the Pope’s wish to bring it up slowly to give the uneducated time to mull it over. We have the same situation with the Two Spirit concept.

About the Author ()

Tell us about yourself...I knew at 7 years that I wanted to be a girl. At 9, I started to question whether that was a test or a mistake. At 53, finally had to talk about it with someone, and found a counselor that specialized in life style choices. Soon, I was getting ready for my first time out in public, though I admit I masked it as part of Halloween. Entered a "best costume" contest at a two local bars. Got a prize at one, never made it to the announcement of the winner at the second. Since, have opened the door to trick-or-treaters dressed, and this year dressed for Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's Day and showed pictures of the dress I sewed for Valentine's. Have fabric coming to sew a dress for St. Patrick's Day. Slowly but surely, gathering the courage to come out and start RLE.
