The Occasional Woman: Layer Up!

Dear Readers, We here in the east are experiencing some roller-coaster weather! One day it’s 21 degrees, the next it is more like 50+! What’s a lady to do? I’ll tell you what is a great course of action. The way I see it, we have two main choices.

1. Stay home in your fuzzy robe and fluffy slippers, and eat until your robe no longer fits.

2. LAYER LIKE A PRO!

Yes, although staying home and eating one’s way through the refrigerator has its pluses, you will eventually have to venture out—and you might need to grease the door posts. So, shall we abandon the “hiding” option, and proceed to LAYERING instead?

Okay, so your goal is to get the hell outta your domicile and not freeze or contract pneumonia! Let’s start with the basic outfit—something in a natural fiber as your basic, beginning layer—you will be comfortable, and not get all sweaty as the day (or night) goes on.

One really useful item is a scarf! They keep your neck warm, and are often very lightweight and soft. Consider a fabulous cashmere scarf—it’s like having a soft kitten asleep on you. But without the sneezing. Even a thin silk scarf will keep you cozy and look gorgeous, and draw the eyes of onlookers to your face.

In the coldest months, we want to dig out the fur, down or wool coat. When the weather is iffy, we can scale it back to a lighter-weight wrap, and leave a heavy coat in the car. A light-weight wool coat with a thin lining will keep the winds and mists off of you, and let the (potential) perspiration just evaporate off. There are some beautiful cotton and rayon woven outerwear pieces out there, which are terribly comfortable and stylish.

You might think shawls and wraps are old-lady-ish; and they can be just that. But they don’t have to look dowdy! I have a gorgeous, lightweight cashmere wrap that is stunning and makes me feel fabulous! It weighs next to nothing, and wrapped loosely about the shoulders is pretty darn wonderful.

Another nice thought is a beautiful, feminine raincoat. I have a turquoise one that is most fun! Okay, I actually have TWO turquoise raincoats—I love a pop of color whenever possible. Nothing cheers a girl up like a bright color on a dreary day—and you will outshine all the other ladies in their black, grey, brown and drab-wear.

Finally-consider leather! Leather coats can be very lightweight, and protect you from inclement weather. And they look BITCHIN’ as all get-out. Enjoy the approach of spring!
