Dressing for Summer Heat

Linen blend dress.

Hello, Dear Readers! I am here sitting on the floor, as it is cooler there. I realize that soon I will have to get up, and get kind of dressed up- and it is 95 degrees out! Too hot for snakes! But, I still must put on something decent, find my eyeliner and leave the house… But, what can I POSSIBLY put on that will cover stuff up, and NOT make me sweat like a banshee?

I bet we have ALL had to deal with heat vs Fashion- and I am here to advise you on Dressing in Gawd-Awful Heat Spells!

My First bit of advice is this: Opt for natural fibers when gussying up in HAWT weather. They are generally a wider weave than polyesters, meaning they will not trap your natural effluvial emissions and sweat, so that air circulating will keep you cool- as Nature intended. Man-made fabrics are much tighter and clingier, so your dewy perspiration will just stay stuck on your skin- and will be overly hot AND can smell pretty bad. Sweat will just build up, other people will wrinkle their noses and edge away from you. Unless you can cool down ASAP, you could get overheated, and faint away from the heat! NOT what one wants when trying to impress!

Let’s go back and see what could have been more heat-sensitive choices.

1. Wearing natural fabrics! I mean linen, cotton, silk, rayon and some viscose items. Linen looks cool and smart as the fiber weave is loose and will not trap sweat. Cotton- so comfy! So lightweight! So non-deadly! And my favorite- SILK. Always luscious to wear, and skims the body beautifully. NOT trapping perspiration, or causing you to overheat. Rayon is another great choice. It is made up of skillfully processed wood fibers, and almost drifts over your curves. Hawaiian shirts are often made of rayon-and those “aloha shirts” are so blissfully soft and drapey that you will thank me for suggesting this “miracle fiber”.

2. Wear lighter colors- mainly these lighter tones are more placid-looking, and much more in season for summer. Lighter pinks, greens and sky-blue turquoise just make one FEEL cooler!

Loose fitting rayon blouse.

3. Go for a slightly looser fit. This allows cooling air to circulate around your clothing, leaving you feeling AND looking cooler than, say, a tight-fitting skirt or blouse. Also, a looser fit keeps the clothing from sticking to your skin- and irritating you, which is not a good look.

4. Lose the pantyhose whenever possible. They are like wearing a dry-cleaners bag on half of your body, EEEEUW! And peeling them off of a sweaty body is just torture.

Last, but seriously not least- ALWAYS USE SUNSCREEN- because nobody looks good in skin cancer.

Enjoy the summer comfortably- and Safely.
