Welcome to Drag – Trans – Non-Binary in Showbiz! We’ve merged the Trans in Film and Video with the TransTainment column in order to bring you transgender news from the world of entertainment faster. Now, on to the news.

Cole Escola at the premier.

Cole Escola, due to the success of his  play, Oh Mary! is an “overnight” sensation. Just 17 years after taking up acting he is suddenly famous for wrting and starring in an off-Broadway show. Previously, the actor had been known for YouTube skits and supporting roles on TV shows like Search Party and At Home With Amy Sedaris. Now he’s gone from YouTube and off-Broadway theaters and designer Jackson Wiederhoeft take Escola in hand to pick a red carpet outfit for the Broadway premier of Oh, Mary! You can see the choices that were offered to the star in The New York Times. We think the gown he chose is perfect.

Cast mate Bianca Leigh is a trans woman and her red carpet gown can be seen, along with other photos from opening night in Playbill.

Cats has learned how to vogue. The story has been updated to the world of the house ball and titled Cats: The Jellicle Ball. Rather than actors in bulky fur cat suits performing on a back alley set the action takes place in a queer ballroom competition and the cats are sleek vogue dancers. There’s nary a kitty whisker in sight. Cats: The Jellicle Ball tickets on New York Theatre Guide. At the Perelman Performing Arts Center through July 28.

There’s a new musical production of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, with a book by Taylor Mac and music by Jason Robert Brown. The show had its world premiere at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre on July 8. This production puts the focus of the story on Lady Chablis, a transgender cabaret performer, who is played by Grammy and Tony Award-winning performer J. Harrison Ghee. Playbill has an interview with Taylor Mac that will give you more info on the production.

Ms. Mulvaney

Dylan Mulvaney is in rehearsal for her upcoming Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut. Her solo musical FAGHAG will play Assembly George Square Studios July 31–August 25. The show will look into Mulvaney’s life behind the scenes of her joyous TikTok series, Days of Girlhood, which documented her gender transition. That series, which became a viral sensation, made her one of the most famous trans women in the USA.

Transgender musician Robin Skinner, known as Cavetown, talked to the Orlando Weekly about the process he uses to write and record platinum albums. He treats each album project as a journal in which he records what he is going through or feeling. From his first single This Is Home released in 2015 by a teenage Skinner, to his major label LP Worm Food in 2022 on Sire, Skinner feels his work has matured alongside his fans. His early work tend to express his confusion about his gender. Meeting other transgender artists helped him to feel like a part of a community. Read the whole interview here.

Boyband architect Simon Cowell is auditioning male singers for the next big boyband. Being in a Cowell band opens doors and careers are started there. Why are we mentioning this? Cowell has reached out to include trans men at the auditions. Who knows? Maybe Cowell’s band will birth the first trans man mega star. Learn more from the Mirror.
