You Sir, Are a Urinal Cake

The Artist D, May 2015

There are so many advocates out there today. We are lost in a sea of advocates and spokespersons. I am reminded of this when I am urinating on the urinal cake branded with the logo of a local plumbing company. Life with all of its advocates and spokesmen-and-women are that urinal cake. We’re a society of branding filled with companies and people with hobbies who demand to be heard, watched and bought.

What’s important to you is not important to the person next to you and is probably not important at all to me. Some of you want the right to have rights and some others just want to party. Then there are those whom wish to just watch the world burn.  Burn baby, burn!

There are so many people on this planet and in our many countries. We all have voices and we have all entered into a generation, a century, where being heard is an expectation instead of a matter of fame. With many thanks given to the Internet we are amplified as individuals and each one of us is given a ticket to get ourselves a soap box. This soap box turns into a platform and the platform turns into a stage. Some people manage to turn the stage into an amphitheater. Everybody’s got an opinion just like they have a … well,  you know.

As I stared down at that urinal cake the other day I wondered if this is the proud sign of modern day advancement. We’ve come so far that we are now vying for attention upon that on which we piss. It’s how I look at the posts my friends link on their walls. She did this and you won’t believe what happened next! You’ll be shocked! Your heart will break! It’s every piece of marketing that arrives in my email box telling me what I ought to purchase to plaster myself with this week. It’s the post box filled with nothing but promotions about car loans and life insurance. Every marketer has an angle and has a product to sell. Every individual has an opinion and a constructive reason to believe. Say you believe! Oh, I believe! The car dealer tells you the best deal for your wheels. The preacher tells you the best deal for your soul. The national news tells you all about your next best most informed transgender spokesperson who must surely be an expert. An expert like your car dealer.

We get so caught up in the top level minutia. The man-uitia of the patriarchy and the madness of the infringing matriarchy. We get so caught up in the stupidity and the nothingness. We’re not talking about the kids. We’re not saving another generation. We’re not finding reasons to smile freely. We’re just staring down at the urinal cake of life and thinking maybe we should call someone who advertises on something people relieve themselves upon.

I like to lift the curtain and shine a flashlight on what is back there. Who is back there, anyway? I appreciate the people I can find who aren’t on soap boxes or stages. I like when we can go away to the dark corners that they find comfort and talk about their real problems. How do they really feel and what can they tell me that they won’t tell Diane Sawyer?

Too much of this world is all about marketing our product that we forget we shouldn’t have to market ourselves. Our opinions are starting to turn into our products. A quiet conversation in the corner and a nice glow stick party at the private underground club should just be perfectly good enough.

Just once I would like to turn on my TV and see a trans-person commenting on a subject without a single mention of transgenderism.

Gay people stopped talking about themselves a long tine ago, it’s time we did the same.
