Last Wednesday, November 20, wa Transgender Day of Remembrance. The Human Rights Campaign has an assessment of violence against transgender people int eh U.S. in the last year, while Amnesty International has a global look at the subject.

On the day before Transgender Day of Remembrance, a Black transgender woman named Quanesha Shantel was shot to death with a semi-automatic weapon. This story comes from The Advocate.

Santonio Coleman, a Black gender-nonconforming person, was killed in Athens, Georgia, on October 19. The Advocate reports that the police are investigating the murder as a hate crime.

Two transgender women were beaten at a light rail station in Minneapolis, as a crowd of bystanders cheered. This story comes from LGBTQ News.

Nearly 100 Democrats from the U.S. House of Representatives took part in an observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance. The Advocate has this story.

On the sixth day of Transgender Awareness Week, U.S. Representative Nancy Mace introduced a bill which, if enacted, would require transgender people to use the restroom of their “biological sex” when on Capitol Hill. On Transgender Day of Remembrance, Representative Mace announced the introduction of a bathroom bill which would cover all federal properties. This would even cover restrooms in airports, according to Erin Reed.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson enacted Representative Nancy Mace’s segregation of the restroom on Capitol Hill by “biological sex” on his own, without bringing the measure to a vote. Since all members of Congress have their own restroom facilities in their offices, the measure is not particularly effective against Representative-elect Sarah McBride, who is the intended target. Representative-elect Sarah McBride announced that she will comply with the ban on transgender people using the restroom which corresponds to their gender identity while on Capitol Hill. Many transgender people feel betrayed, some by her decision to accept the ban, some by the fact that she failed to fight for other transgender people, and others by her reasoning. Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS) has introduced the “Defining Male and Female Act of 2024.” It defines these terms according to reproductive capacity. In which case, really, anyone who is sterile is neither male nor female. This story comes from Them.

Next month, the Supreme Court will hear a case based on the constitutionality of Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors. The Guardian reports that the Supreme Court will hear from the same anti-transgender doctors whom some other courts have determined to be unfamiliar with gender-affirming medical care and its statistics.

After the Trump campaign ran ads opposing “transgender ideology,” many are expecting some anti-transgender action by the incoming administration. A ban on transgender athletes, and a nationwide ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors seem to be likely. Adult healthcare is unlikely to face a full-on ban, but the Trump administration could push a policy of federal funds not being used to pay for gender-affirming health care for adults. Former Representative Matt Gaaetz has withdrawn his name from nomination for the post of Attorney General. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi to head the federal department. Ms. Bondi’s record on LGBTQ issues is reviewed by The Advocate, which does not seem to mention any trans issues in the review.

Dr. Mehmet Oz has been nominated to head run the Medicare program. Dr. Oz featured transgender children on his show a couple of times, but he also featured a segment on “reparative therapy” (i.e., conversion therapy), which he did not condemn, He stated that 80$ to 85% of transgender children will “go back to their biological gender if they are “not influenced,” which certainly is not what recent studies show. A probate court in Ohio has denied an application to change the sex marker on a birth certificate, and the Supreme Court of the state let that decision stand. Ohio has never approved a method of changing the sex marker on birth certificates, but some judges have issued orders to change the sex markers, and the Department of Health has obeyed such orders. Los Angeles City Council voted to become a sanctuary city for transgender people and their families. Those who travel to Los Angeles seeking gender-affirming medical care will be shielded from prosecution back home, and the school district will protect transgender students from discrimination. President-elect Donald Trump has talked a lot about how he will end “transgender inanity,” but what specifically can he do? That is the subject of a story in Them.
